Case background

The Curriculum Standards emphasize the importance of English in international communication and cultural dissemination, pointing out that reading in English can deepen students' understanding and identification with Chinese and foreign cultures, and enhance cultural confidence. However, there are problems in current primary school English reading teaching, such as neglecting the cultivation of cultural awareness, inaccurate positioning of teaching objectives, and insufficient reading experience. To address these issues, the author attempts to integrate excellent traditional Chinese culture into primary school English reading instruction, enriching students' reading experience and pragmatic practice through project-based learning, and enhancing cross-cultural communication skills and cultural confidence.

Case Presentation

Introduced the practical methods of integrating excellent traditional Chinese culture into the teaching of whole book English reading in primary schools. Firstly, a reading teaching model aimed at developing students' core competencies was proposed, which promotes the coordinated development of students' language learning, reading literacy, and core competencies through various teaching frameworks. Secondly, following the "2W+4H" exploration approach, design the entire book reading teaching path, and systematically plan from six aspects: goals, content, methods, strategies, evaluation, and innovation. Subsequently, strategies for educating students through reading were discussed, including planning reading courses, selecting reading materials, designing gradient objectives, building multidimensional reading and writing scaffolds, and expanding practical activities, in order to optimize the educational environment and enhance students' cultural literacy. In addition, it emphasizes the use of cyclic and progressive reading activities to promote the coordinated development of language, culture, and thinking. Finally, it is proposed to use project-based exploration activities as a starting point to promote cultural practice in deep reading, and to achieve practical learning that integrates knowledge and action through the project implementation process. At the same time, teachers need to develop evaluation criteria that promote reading through evaluation, observe the development process of students' literacy, construct a diversified evaluation system, and achieve cultural integration and three-dimensional evaluation.
